heat wave! [Nov. 10th, 2009|10:45 am]
not_an_elf
It's been over 25 here for the last 4 days, and it's a bit of a shock.

Salads, yoghurt breakfasts (with the lovely stuff from the Tamar Valley Dairy, made by the awesome Archie Matteo), and smoothies as far as the eye can see.

What happened to my coffee addiction? Very odd.

This time I am pleased to be able to offer you a double showcase: both are Venetian, both are gorgeous in both style and execution. The 1560s is represented by Ekaterina from Russia in glorious red brocade, and the 1520s by Noelle and her model Holly, from Utah USA, in luscious blue satin.

Enjoy!

Row, Row, Row Your Bloody Enormous Floating Hotel [Nov. 9th, 2009|09:15 pm]

I am sitting on a large throbbing cast iron dinghy, heading south. The fact that it's possible to write this blog entry and even post it via wireless intarwobs is quite boggling, but that's what you get for living in the future.

Navigating in Melbourne was like living in the future, too – 1984 perhaps, or Brazil, or one of the earlier Mad Max movies. A large part of the problem was Nokia's excremental Maps program, which should be grounds for the summary executation by genital nailgunning of every person involved in its design and implementation and all of their immediate family as well. Eventually I downloaded Google Maps, and was greatly pleased. This didn't immediately make navigation a joy, but it improved it to the point where we only wanted to die in a nuclear explosion rather than take every denizen of Melbourne with us.

We went to ScienceWorks for most of the day, in between interminable navigating, and had a lovely time in the air conditioning, watching our munchkins playing. Then we queued for ages and drove onto the abovementioned dinghy, and just like that we were on our way to another countryTasmania. Woot!

Sylvie (http://static-sidhe.deviantart.com/) has been using cosplayers from over the country for the dual purpose of promoting cosplay in NZ and to further her experience with photography.

Firstly the plug for her work:
http://gallery.little-noise.com/main.php
Lots more fabulous photos and cosplayers to go ooh and ahh over XD

In September she traveled the country to do photoshoots in nifty public locations and I was lucky enough to snaffle two spots :D One in the Clocktower of Auckland Uni and also in Albert park and then the next day a trip to Bethhells Beach.
Dawn and Mara:
http://gallery.little-noise.com/main.php?g2_itemId=8940
Mara starts on page 5 :)
Some of these made their way into Sylvie's book on cosplay along with short bios of each cosplayer. It's a fabulous read into what spurs on the cosplayers to do what they do.

And then again Sylvie did some photoshoots at the WinterGardens in the Domain:
http://gallery.little-noise.com/main.php?g2_itemId=12190 Slave Leia
http://gallery.little-noise.com/main.php?g2_itemId=12354 Catwoman

Film photos will be up soon and I am nervous but looking forward to the Holga pics :D I would love to get a Holga for myself but the film and processing may not be in my price range ;) Am on the hunt for some cheapie digital cameras :D

I am always looking for cover versions of Talking Heads' Psycho Killer. Don't ask me why, it's probably just my sick sense of humour.

Speaking of sick sense of humour, here's a version by the Kransky Sisters...

It's the yodelling that does it for me.

Quote book required [Nov. 9th, 2009|12:01 pm]

[mood | amused]

We've decided that we need a quote book for our truck...

Blair to me, just after I'd declared "last card": "Dammit, I've got nothing to fuck you with."

*pause*

*chorus of sniggers from the rest of the crew*

"Er... in a purely platonic and non-sexual context, that is... Ah fuck, there's nothing I can say to get myself out of this, is there...?"

*much laughter*

The rural fire force is predominantly male, and as such the high quality witty reparte is generally homoerotic, and often involves fart jokes and comments about the sexual proclivities of someone's mother. It gains added hilarity when everyone is very sleep-deprived and there is the sudden embarrassment of realising that the comment was aimed at one of the girls rather than the boys.

Maybe you just had to be there.

We also came up with a phonetic alphabet for use when talking to people we didn't like - Asshole, Buttface, Cock, etc. And there were tales of amusing radio traffic heard over the LMR - "one newspaper fire, fully involved, extinguishing with size 9 boot" - we heard of a few rubbish bin fires where the crew involved was "at work with a bucket" on Guy Fawkes night.

Too Damn Hot, Also More On Regrettable Official Decisions And The Precise Resting Place Of The Buck [Nov. 8th, 2009|11:16 pm]

etfb
Twenty minutes left to post an entry! Where did the time go?

Hmmm, actually I know where it went: in wrangling a stupidly overtired BatPup:

She would not, could not go to bed.
She would not, could not lay her head.
She will not lie down on a mat.
She will not lie down near a cat.
She will not doze off near the wall.
She will not doze off here at all.
She does not want to sleep tonight...
She may be dead before first light.

But let's take it backwards. The Beloved is presently soothing her and singing her to sleep, having now also done the same for the Boy Wonder on our airbed in [info]mr_bassman and [info - personal] mrsbrown's back room. I took the EDoD out for a walk down to the local Coles to get some stuff, which had the benefit of soothing her too.

We had some assorted friends over for a BBQ and general natter, so I have now finally properly met [info]catsidhe and [info]mimdancer. In between wrangling small people I got to chat a bit with [info]bar_barra and [info]actrealdon and meet his and [info]pezzae's very tiny Small Person, who is gorgeous. [info]mr_bassman, who is a lovely man despite his cruelty to his own toes (don't ask), took me to Tullamarine to pick up the EDoD from her flight; it turns out she missed out on Pony Club due to a fractious horse, so she could have come with us after all... but I think we're glad she didn't because it would have been hellish with the weather we're having.

We got to the home of [info]mr_bassman et al (I'm getting REALLY tired of writing out all those angle brackets by now) around 4pm, having left Albury in plenty of time to get there an hour earlier; the delay was mainly due to the BatPup and the Boy Wonder being grumpy and requiring an awful lot of stops. I managed to get enough sleep, despite being bloody angry at the news I received last night, which those who know me can read between the lines enough to calculate.

And on that topic, it was pointed out to me that blaming the Royalty for the actions of the Peers is not always appropriate. I can accept that. However, there are times when merely holding one's nose and deciding to treat it all a learning experiences is not the best option. This, I'm quite sure, is one of those times. Wherever the buck really stops, nobody has impressed me. A stupid decision was made and was allowed to be realised. That's not good. Take this as my "time-out" warning; beyond continuing in my mostly on-line obligations, I will have nothing further to do with the SCA for the foreseeable future, at least until a few more people will admit to what I already know regarding certain people and their fitness for office.

It has been a while... [Nov. 8th, 2009|11:17 pm]

[mood | cheerful]

So, since Labour weekend:

Labour weekend: Fri to Mon morning Folk festival. I think it worked out to ~9 hours of singing in total + some very good concerts and some occasional sleeping. Picked up 2 CDs from groups I liked - The Jimies* and Catgut and Steel. Got home round lunch and with assistance from many wonderful people (S,S,T,K and R) there were 2 loads done and the majority of stuff was over. And much food and good company in the evening, hosted by R&S&A. And then the first night in the new place.

* Yay to very good "celtization" of Eleanor Rigby.

The following week was filled with the usual paid work in the day and house cleaning and shifting remnants of stuff in the evenings. That weekend, on the Sat, we did the last cleaning and gardening and formally surrendered keys etc for the old place. Sweet-off Local big fireworks display in the evening (if I remember correctly - Ed: nope). Sun was unpacking. Kitchen and books seemed highest priority.

This past week has been more unpacking on average. Thurs was spent in town at the fireworks over the Harbour. Many big sparkly explosions.

This weekend: Fri evening much late night company and conversation at R's for his birthday drinkies. Sat: more tidying than unpacking. Much fun at M's steam-punk birthday party. Many quite cool costumes. Sun: more unpacking and tidying and rearranging.

Dug out the embroidery, so finally able to get back to working on the blackworked coif. All the way across at the top now.

Think that covers things.

Sat down at the computer at about 6am and just kept writing until I had to leave for church. I have achieved word count (this if for day eight) but if you add it all up I did about 3,000 words today.

Also just spent most of the afternoon sitting at the kitchen table marking so my update is pretty impressive today.

Now for an evening of chicken curry (thank you to whomever invented the slow-cooker), cleaning, watching TV and folding the clothes that are threathening to swallow my couch.

Saya photos from earlier this year. Not sure where they are in my lj but I can't find them in an archive search. Possibly because the fabric wasn't ironed and it was dark so no photos came out well ;)

Flatlined with the interlining and pinned to my DTD. Hard to show how it really looks but this is just an idea for the placement of the main trimming.

This is the main trimming. I would really love another 10m of it but it looks like it may not happen. It's 2cm wide and real metal if anyone happens across it ;)

Trimming with the added ribbon to make it fill out the space a bit more. It works. Well it will once it has a little bath to antique the tone up a bit.

My fabric. Much as I would adore this in green with the lures side out I think the white is just that little bit more austere.

Making bacon really is not difficult, I have put together a simple how to

http://www.isabell.paradise.gen.nz/Other%20cooking/How%20to%20make%20bacon.pdf

I have two currently sitting in the fridge, one with maple syrup and one without, they will be ready on Wednesday.

Should be tasty.  Enjoy.

I will also put together a how to make sausages sheet too, but that might be a couple of weeks away with Nov crown and St Caths in the next two weeks.

Quiet on the western front please... [Nov. 8th, 2009|08:37 am]

[mood | exhausted]

Thursday

  • Guy Fawkes - nothing - 18:00-22:30 patrolling city - all quiet on the western front.

Friday

  • 14:32 - scrub fire - Titahi Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant - K28 (stand down) just as we are leaving the station
  • 22:39-01:30 - scrub fire - Wadestown Road

Saturday

  • 08:00 - 16:00 - Exercise Phoenix - cordoning off areas for helicopter landings & fire crew rappel drops. Scored a free ride in the chopper - never hurts to ask...

Sunday

  • 00:15-08:30 - scrub fire - Paekakariki Hill Rd - sleep deprivation makes for really weird conversations

Today looks lovely, but since I've already seen the first 9 hours of it, I think I'll go to sleep.

Albury and Stupid Royalty [Nov. 7th, 2009|09:37 pm]

etfb
We've arrived at Aunty Debbie and Uncle Greg's place in Albury. The trip down was relatively painless, apart from the glare off the roads that made it bloody painful. Must get wrap-around sunglasses! The Boy Wonder slept for about half the trip, but the BatPup stayed awake and complained about being bored (silly monkey).

We've introduced the monkeys to their Graunts and Gruncles (Great Aunts and Great Uncles), plus some Grousins (ie first cousins once removed) and one Scousin (second cousin). Having a pleasant time, especially now that the monkeys are all asleep. It's bloody hot of course, because Albury is a very silly place. Looking forward to Tassie weather even more now.

Meanwhile, I've just heard the news from the SCA: the Kingdom of Lochac has officially jumped the shark. The peerage system, specifically the Order of the Pelican, no longer has any credibility, and anyone here who tries to stand up for them will be laughed at. Bitterly. And then I'll spit in their faces. The best I can hope is that they'll never offer me a peerage, because a punch in the face often offends...

Squee! For those with multiple ear peircings ;) She has two in her left ear :) Love the zoom Museo del prado, it's wonderful :) Also nice clear evidence of hair wrapping and that these headdresses are not puffy cauls! Elizabeth de Valois is an interesting case though. There are more distinct shapes and it does appear to be a net of pearls of multiple layers.
I've already mentioned the gown is actually satin so we don't need to go there again. Ever. ;) I do though wonder if I have enough small pearls to embroider my own gown properly though. And if it would drive me too batty. And indeed if I would do the wide chevron velvet ribbon (which is hinted on her memorial statue). Black on black details. Gotta love 'em ;)

This would be my embroidered jacket should I ever be mad enough to start one ;)
